Artist Statement
“No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness.” Toska Russian – Vladmir Nabokov
I create art to capture the things I cannot say. I pick my poison, stick to my convictions, and worship the moments before dawn when I feel the most awake.
These intuitive states of being have lead me to recreate the world around me through a lens which I would like my audience to share in. The images I create are prismatic, kaleidoscopic, reflections of awe towards the world around us. In my landscape work, I explore architecture and cityscapes as sites of psychological experience. Using photographs I am able to signify moments that allow one to recall the affective experiences of a specific place. In this way, my work is concerned with how the formality of painting can be opened up for subjective perception and individual experience. This reveals itself through through a rawness of brushstrokes. I do not attempt to represent the actual place or space, but depict the layers that construct one’s own navigation of an area, and the ways in which our conscious minds come to understand and be affected by a sense of place. The phenomenology of my surroundings. There are multiple perspectives on space and time in my work. A notion of temporality, just as the skies seem in constant motion, these landscapes remain unfixed and impermanent. The structural planes that compose our sense of reality are put into flux, wherein the insides become outside and vice versa, thereby constructing a feeling of dislocation.

Linda and I met you at your work today, and you gave me your card. I like your art and will come to your shows if I am not in the tropics. I usually work in the Bahamas (or perhaps Jamaica). Thanks for your hospitality on Murray Street.
